Bad News Bonklesford

Graduating from the Duke Street orphanage, Rose Bonklesford takes on a new role as a governess for a family that can’t keep track of their children.

The estate is a magnet for wayward children. The number of young people hiding out in the estate grows under Rose’s watch.

With the Christmas season closing in and winter taking hold, Rose finds it impossible to turn children away. After all, they remind her so much of herself.

Baron Gregory noticed Rose Bonklesford the moment she arrived. He’s soon inventing reasons to visit her and involve her in extra tasks. He’s seen how wonderful she is with the children, including the many by-blows who are the result of his late brother’s lascivious behavior.

However, he cannot keep inventing excuses to see Miss Bonklesford. Alas he also cannot help himself as her kisses unravel his tightly controlled emotions.

It might be getting very cold outside, but Miss Bonklesford and Baron Gregory are about to combust.

Coming Up In The World

Frank Franklin is one of the first in his family to obtain the lofty position of footman. By family, he means among the hundreds of street ruffians and foundlings raised in the Duke Street Orphanage over the past fifty years.

It’s an honour and also a burden as he takes up his new career for the Eberhard family. His success or failure could affect the future careers of many more orphans. No pressure or anything!

Baron Eberhard is the recipient of a scarlet macaw, a bizarre gift from the prince regent. Captain Scarlet - for that is the bird’s name - has a broad vocabulary and the manners of an alley cat!

That bird is going to ruin the baron’s daughter Clara’s first season if they can’t get it under control.

All too soon, Franklin forgets himself and takes far too many liberties with Clara and is dismissed.

Before long, Clara’s mama has spirited herself to Brighton to appeal to the prince regent to take the bird back. Papa Eberhard, whose name is now mud thanks to the bird’s embarrassing phrases, has retreated to his club.

Clara is left to her own devices and amusements, which includes finding ways to cross paths with Franklin far too often.
